The Illiterate States of America?!?!?!

Friday night, for the first time in a long time, I watched television. Since we don’t have it at home, it was a nice change to see moving pictures to go along with current events.  As I flipped through the never-ending, and nonetheless unsatifsying 1,000s of Dish channels, something really struck me like a brick wall. For the last several months I’ve been getting this feeling as I’ve interacted with people in California.  At first I felt and dismissed it in LA, now it’s hit me again.  What the HELL is happening to people today. Are people in the United States getting dumber on the whole, or are people becoming so consumed with Orange County Choppers, Jesse James and the crap that’s taken over MTV that the notion of basic grammar and enunciation has eluded them???  I mean I’m no genius.  I’m probably just slightly higher than the average person’s intelligence with a keen ability to know how to use an em-dash, an en-dash and a couple other cool pieces of punctutation.  However, I DO open my mouth and speak clearly when I talk.  I make a ‘t’ sound like ‘tee’ and not like a ‘d’ with a mouthful of potato chips. It’s really not that hard.

Now I’m not asking us to, as a country, become smarter.  That would take electing better people than we have choices for presently, overhauling the educational system in the US completely and throwing away at least one-to-two generations as ‘whoopsies’  (that’s also an altogether exponentially-longer thread).  I am, however, saying that if you think your opinions are worth being heard, make them worth hearing.

Man, this drives me insane. I’m convinced that the general population will be serfs in a few more generations down the road.
